Cardinal Raymond Burke |
According to a press bulletin released yesterday, the pontiff removed Cardinal Raymond Burke as the leader of the Vatican’s highest court and appointed him to a ceremonial position as chaplain of the Knights of Malta, a charity group.
Burke, who until yesterday was the highest-ranking American in the Vatican, gave a series of recent interviews criticizing the pope and had emerged as the face of conservative opposition to Francis' reform agenda.
However, last month, Burke had said he had been told he would move to a new job but did not know when.
Last month during an interview with a Spanish magazine, he mentioned that Pope Francis’ leadership was like “a ship without a rudder”.
