OIC calls on members to recognize the State of Palestine and East Jerusalem as its capital.

In an apparent declaration of its disagreement of Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the 57 members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have issued a communique calling on "all countries to recognize the State of Palestine and East Jerusalem as its occupied capital."

The Islamic body also issued a statement today that it remains committed to a "just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution".

It also called on the UN to "end the Israeli occupation" of Palestine and declared Trump's administration liable for "all the consequences of not retracting from this illegal decision"

The OIC held the emergency summit in Istanbul in response to Donald Trump's recognition last week of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The meeting was called by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Muslim leaders said the declaration was "null and void legally" and invited the US president to rescind the "unlawful decision that might trigger chaos in the region."

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyu responded later today saying

"We are not impressed by all these statements. It is better for the Palestinians to recognize reality and act for peace, not for radicalization, and to recognize another fact about Jerusalem: not only is it the capital of Israel, we also maintain respect in Jerusalem for the freedom of worship for all religions."
