Book Review: In Pursuit of Purpose by Myles Munroe

The desire to be fulfilled and seek relevance has caused a lot of depressing thoughts for many persons. Often, they wander the need for life in itself. Are they in this world to just exist? Is life all about being born, going to school, getting married, having a job, simply existing till the day you die?

Bahamian renowned author and life coach, Dr. Myles Munroe has given an insight into how you can achieve relevance and significance on earth with his book, In Pursuit of Purpose. The 149-page book with twelve chapters espoused ways individuals can follow their purpose on earth and make a mark at the end of their life's journey.

Dr. Myles Munroe dedicated "In Pursuit of Purpose" to the human heart; to every individual given birth by destiny; to the one who finds life empty, aimless, and busy, but not effective; to the reader who he desires a purposeful life characterized by effectiveness, efficiency, and fulfillment; to all who are oppressed by the ignorance of others; to every generation that seeks meaning and a reason for living.

The first chapter of the book talked about the need to understand purpose. Dr. Munroe stated that until purpose is discovered, existence has no meaning, for purpose is the source of fulfillment. The author gave an instance of a young doctor Clyde Wilson jr. who went all out to fulfill the dreams of his father.

His father had wanted to become a doctor but he could not achieve that dream. Hence, he projected his dream on his son who he gave his resources to achieve his unfulfilled dream. His son achieved that dream but he felt unfulfilled. He was also honored for his outstanding works as a doctor. However, he felt he was not the owner of his life.

According to Dr. Munroe, a person can be busy, active, dedicated, faithful, famous, respected, revered, and admired but deep inside, they are tired, frustrated, bored, disillusioned, confused, depressed, and empty. He also added that no amount of accomplishments can replace the power and the motivation of finding your own special niche and working toward your dreams.

More so, every individual must discover their purpose on earth before anything else. Your purpose is your uniqueness. Above all else, pursue purpose with a passion and experience the reason for your life.

The second chapter talked about the nature of purpose. In this chapter, Dr. Munroe stated that plans may change but purpose is constant. Also, he stated that understanding the nature of purpose is an important prelude to discovering God's purpose for our lives. Purpose is inherent, purpose is individual, it is often multiple, interdependent, permanent, resilient, and it is universal.

The third chapter talked about the principles of purpose. The author reinforced the need to keep your head and heart going in the right direction, and you will not have to worry about your feet. Besides, he stated that principles are like lighthouses; they are laws that cannot be broken.

Chapter four to eight talked about the priority of purpose, purpose and time, purpose and position, purpose and vision, and the benefits of purpose respectively. Dr. Munroe in chapter four said that purpose coincides with natural talents and abilities. Likewise, purpose determines demand, and demand dictates potential.

There was also an emphasis on time which is always given for the completion of every purpose, in chapter five. Chapter six espoused the need to be in the right position before your purpose can be fulfilled. Violation of purpose always causes chaos and destruction.

In chapter seven, Dr. Munroe said that purpose provides vision; it sets goals that motivate a plan of action; it protects you from being busy but not effective.

In chapter eight, the benefits of purpose are thoroughly explained. Purpose gives you confidence, protection, objectivity, contentment, joy, intercession of the Holy Spirit, and makes you persevere against all odds.

Chapter nine talked about the source of purpose. The author explained that God is the source of purpose. God's purpose has not changed; He has destined us to manifest His glory to the world.

Chapter ten talked about the perils of purpose: the peril of criticism, deception, arrogance, and if we do not find our purpose on earth, satan will find one for us.

In chapter eleven, there was an explanation on the difference between success and purpose. The author stated that success can only be defined by purpose and measured by disobedience.

The last chapter was a message from Dr. Munroe to the third world. The renowned author stated that possessions, fame, status, and power can never be substituted for a personal sense of purpose and significance.

True freedom and fulfillment are possible only as you discover and understand your personal purpose.
