Three persons have killed in a knife attack in a church in Nice, France. A woman was said to have been beheaded in the attack and no details was given of how the two others were killed.
The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, described the attack as an act of terrorism and said it happened in or near the city’s Notre Dame church and that police had detained the attacker.
Estrosi further added that the attacker had shouted the phrase “Allahu Akbar”, or God is greatest.
It has been confirmed that the incident happened at 9 a.m. Thursday morning inside the Notre-Dame basilica in the city centre
Estrosi said: “We have two people killed inside the church … and a third person who was in a bar facing the church where she had taken refuge.
One of the people killed inside the church was believed to be the church warden. The attacker kept shouting “Allahu Akbar” even after he had been detained.
“The suspected knife attacker was shot by police while being detained, he is on his way to hospital, he is alive,” Estrosi told reporters.
“Enough is enough,” Estrosi said. “It’s time now for France to exonerate itself from the laws of peace in order to definitively wipe out Islamo-fascism from our territory.”
Police said three people were confirmed to have died in the attack and several were injured.
