A 14-year-old Christian girl, Mahnoor Ashraf , who was kidnapped earlier this year in Pakistan has been reportedly forced to convert to Islam and marry her neighbor. According to Morning Star News, the teenager who lives in Lahore's Cantonment area, went missing after leaving her home on January 4, 2022 to go to a nearby shop with her 8-year-old nephew.
After Mahnoor’s nephew returned home, he told his family that their 45-year-old Muslim neighbor, Muhammad Ghauri, kidnapped his aunty with his friends assisting him in the act. The neighbor is said to be married and has two children. Akram, Mahnoor’s older brother said that his family started searching for their missing sister and they could not find her even after they went to Ghauri's house.
"Ghauri's house
is on the same street and our families had good terms with each other. We don't
know when he managed to lure Mahnoor into a relationship," Akram said.
Mahnoor’s father, Chaudhry Ashraf, said he filed a police report on January 5 and tendered all the evidence against the suspects in the kidnap of his daughter. However, he noted that police has not been swift on his case.
Akram said, “On January 7, Ghauri's family informed us that Mahnoor had allegedly converted to Islam and married Ghauri on January 4, the day she was taken. The local cleric Muhammad Ibrar performed the Islamic marriage despite the fact he knew that she was a minor.”
This will not be the
first time that Christian girls will be kidnapped and forced to convert to
Islam in Pakistan. This necessitated the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act
which prohibits marriage below the age of 18. There are still plans to
rescue Mahnoor.
