Actor Kelsey Grammer is set to feature in “Jesus Revolution”, a movie based on the true story of a national spiritual development that happened during the 1960s and 1970s in South California, United States.
The movie is centered on the life of Pastor Greg Laurie who was determined to redefine truth. He met with a hippie street preacher, Lonnie Frisbee and they connect with Pastor Chuck Smith, the character that Grammer will be playing.
Frisbee’s role is being portrayed by The Chosen actor, Jonathan Roumie. Pastor Chuck Smith opens up his church to other hippies. Afterward, the church experienced a great spiritual revival which led to the Jesus Revolution.
Smith, the real-life pastor of Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, was Laurie’s mentor. In an interview with Christian Headlines, Laurie said about the film, "I don't think we necessarily knew we were a part of history, but we knew we were part of something very special.
"Thousands of young people were coming to Christ and being baptized. We called it the Jesus movement. Jesus has been a profound influence in my life. I am proud to be a part of this film.”
Laurie later founded Harvest Christian Fellowship, in Riverside, California, which is presently one of the biggest churches in the United States.
"Jesus Revolution" is produced by Kingdom Story in collaboration with Lionsgate. It will be directed by Jon Erwin who is notable for his previous works, I Can Only Imagine and American Underdog.
Erwin said about the film, "It was a time of fear and doubts in a generation that was looking for all the right things but in the wrong places, came to the end of themselves.
"It was just a powerful move of God that was undeniable and it shaped culture and it shaped America. We haven't experienced anything like it."
Erwin continued, "We're thrilled by the incredible cast that has come together. The movie is set in a very specific time and place, but the theme of finding a deeper meaning to life, in the midst of a fractured and broken world, is timeless. In his iconic performances, Kelsey has a proven ability to connect with audiences in a real, vulnerable way, which will make him a tremendous presence in this film."
Other actors starring in the movie include Anna Grace Barlow, Joel Courtney and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. Filming is said to commence soonest. The movie will be released in 2023.
