General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has clarified the statement credited to him that he advised Christians to get guns to defend themselves. In the statement, the cleric was said to have advised Christians to give their attackers "fire for fire."
However, he has come out to refute such statement. According to him, the biblical Samson was victorious with jaw bones and not with riffles.
The octogenarian made this clarification at Mount Carmel while delivering his message ‘Meant for the top’, in the church’s monthly thanksgiving service.
Adeboye said, “I never asked christians to buy guns, christians don’t need guns. Samson did not fight with an AK-47. Don’t go and buy guns. You don’t need permission to buy the jaws bones of a cow."
“I have always wondered how you demonstrate to children in Sunday School but the best way is to show children using the jawbone of a cow. Don’t buy guns.”
He also touched on the topic of domestic violence. He advised that people who are going through such cases should run.
He said, “When it comes to someone contaminating you, slap, bite, kick, and run. When you see a brother smiling as you, run. There are battles you don’t wait to fight. Keep yourself pure."
It would be recalled that on June 5, some gunmen attacked St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State. Many persons were killed and some others were injured. This sad incident made some people to demand that self defense be adopted by Christians.
The Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, described the incident as “black Sunday” as he expressed sadness over the event.
Akeredolu said, “Our hearts are heavy. Our peace and tranquility have been attacked by the enemies of the people,” said Akeredolu in a press statement. “This is a personal loss, an attack on our dear state. … I am shocked to say the least.
“Nevertheless, we shall commit every available resource to hunt down these assailants and make them pay.
“We shall never bow to the machinations of heartless elements in our resolve to rid our state of criminals.”
