More states in the United States of America are seeking a legal ban on abortion. On Thursday, three more states declared a ban on the act despite the pushback from some democrats.
In June, the Supreme Court had given the constitutional right to ban abortion. A Washington Post analysis stated that about 21 million women are unable to have an abortion due to the law.
10 Republican-controlled states had initially banned abortion. Three other states including Tennessee, Idaho and Texas are the latest states to ban it. There are expectations that more states will join in the ban.
It will be recalled that on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court had overturned the landmark 1973 “Roe v. Wade” decision which gave women the right to have an abortion. The apex court law also said that states have the right to establish their own laws.
Under the new law in Texas, doctors who carry out the act are likely to pay a fine of not less than $100,000 or even face jail term.
Although Idaho makes an exception for incest or rape cases which leads to pregnancy, Tennessee and Texas do not.
President Joe Biden, who belongs to the Democratic Party, has criticized the ruling of the Supreme Court. He has also promised to do what he can to reverse the court’s ruling. The court is said to be dominated by conservatives.
Democrats are not relenting with battling the courts. They believe that there is hope for them and they also expect that their candidates in the forthcoming midterm elections will make abortion a major issue.
By November 2022, voters in the United States will determine who gets into the Congress as there are 435 House seats to contest for. Also, 36 out of 50 states and 35 out of the 100 Senate seats will be keenly contested for.
