“Undoubtedly, Cardinal Okpaleke’s firm Christian belief in peace and unity amongst people for the betterment of life has endeared him to many and has registered unprecedented success in the spiritual life of many, as well as the humanitarian, educational and spiritual life of the Catholic community.
“In all circumstances, he has remained faithful to his calling, and has always gone beyond the call of duty for the wellbeing of the Catholic community…
“I look forward to continually supporting him as he intercedes for our Senatorial District, Anambra South; our dear state, Anambra and the nation at large to strengthen the gospel of peace, compassion and unity.”
On his part, Obi said, “I rejoice with His Eminence, Peter Cardinal Okpaleke as he canonically receives the Red Hat from His Holiness, Pope Francis at a Consistory in Rome, by which function, he has become a fully fledged Prince of the Universal Church.
“He has remained a blessing to not just the church in Nigeria, but the universal church. His patience, understanding and wide perspectives on issues remain some of his valuable assets that have continued to propel him higher in the priestly vocation.
“The massive turn out of Nigerians across and religions at the event added colour to the day. It reinforced the spirit of love and unity which transcends tribe and religion, and for which Nigeria is known.”
Also, Soludo said, “With this elevation, Cardinal Okpaleke becomes the only active Cardinal in Nigeria and also the highest in rank among Nigerian clergymen.
“On behalf of the government and good people of Anambra State, I pray that God would grant Cardinal Okpaleke more strength, sound health and wisdom to excel in his assignment in the vineyard of God.”
