Omoniyi Dada, a brother to the slain pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Babatunde Dada, has narrated how the latter died. The suspects, Kasali Jamiu and Farouk Mohammed, have arraigned and are facing trial at the Lagos State High Court, sitting at Tafawa Balawa Square, Lagos State.
Babatunde, who is a prosecuting witness in the case, told the court how he discovered his 46-year-old brother was murdered in the church through a phone call from his younger sister.
Both Jamiu and Mohammed were remanded by Justice Sherifat Sonaike, following their arraignment over the murder case. According to The Punch, Omoniyi was led in evidence by the Director of Public Prosecution, Dr Babajide Martins, at the commencement of the trial.
He told Justice Sonaike that his sister informed him that his brother’s corpse had been taken to the Navy Town Hospital before he got to the church.
Omoniyi said, “According to my sister, Oluwakemi, on that fateful day, my deceased brother told her and the other laundry workers that he was going to the bank and that he would be back.
“She said when he returned, he went upstairs in the church to rest, and she was now thinking of why her brother had not come down after resting for quite some time. One of the laundry workers went up to pick a cloth to wash, on getting there, he screamed.
“The worker screamed and called the rest; they all met the pastor in a pool of blood and he was coughing out blood. They noticed that the two strange boys, Farouk and Jamiu, were not there.”
During the cross-examination, when the counsel for the first defendant, Oyekanmi Isijola, asked the witness how he got to know about his brother’s death, the witness said that everything he knew about the incident was what his sister told him, as he was not present by himself.
The second witness in the case was Inspector Daniel Olumiyiwa, but the court could not proceed to hear his side of the story because his name was not among the list of witnesses.
