Popular American gospel singer, Donnie McClurkin, has reminisced his memorable moment at 'The Experience', Nigeria's biggest gospel musical concert. This year's edition returned to the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, two years after it was restricted to an online event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to McClurkin, his memorable moments at the concert was when it rained heavily and the lights on stage went off but the audience still stayed to worship God.
The award-winning singer said, “It was in 2008 when it rained and the tent collapsed and there were hundreds of thousands of people at TBS and generators went out, microphones went out and we stayed out all the night in the rain and we sang to the people who also sang back to us. We worshiped God and nobody went home.
“To see hundreds of thousands of people stay and worship God in the rain and not go home was a sign of love and commitment that I’ve never seen I. My whole 53years of of salvation and 63years in life.”
McClurkin joined other top gospel artistes including Sinach, Nathaniel Bassey, Mercy Chinwo, Dunsin Oyekan, Tope Alabi, Travis Greene, among others, in this year's edition of the concert which was held from Friday night till Saturday morning, December 3.
Coincidentally, it drizzled when McClurkin was performing at the early hours of this morning. However, the weather became normal after he finished his performance.
Dignitaries present at this year's edition of 'The Experience' included the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi; Lagos State gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Vivor-Rhodes; the Lagos State deputy gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Funke Akindele; fashion icon, Sisi Abah Folawiyo, among others.
At the press conference before the event, its convener, Pastor Paul Adefarasin of House on the Rock Church, said, “One of the most remarkable things about this much-awaited event is its ability to bring together a cross section of people through music, in absolute surrender to their maker, and giving no thought to age, gender, race, status or religious inclinations.
“This is arguably one of the most anticipated and most watched gospel concerts in the world. It’s strictly virtual edition in 2020 was viewed over five million times on YouTube and Facebook.”
