Christian singer Mandisa (real name Mandisa Lynn Hundley) has passed on at the age of 47 years. The former “American Idol” contestant was found dead at her home in Nashville, Tennessee.
She came into limelight when she secured a spot in the top 10 in season five of the reality TV singing competition “American Idol” in 2006.
Following her breakout on "American Idol," Mandisa launched her debut album, "True Beauty," in 2007. It made history by topping Billboard's Christian album chart, marking the first time a female artist achieved this feat. Additionally, the album debuted at No. 43 on the Billboard 200. The lead single, "Only the World," entered the hot singles chart at No. 2 and climbed to No. 1 in its second week.
Her discography includes "It's Christmas" (2008), "Freedom" (2009), "What if We Were Real" (2011), "Overcomer" (2013), "Out of the Dark" (2017), and a greatest hits compilation in 2020. Mandisa earned Grammy nominations for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album with "True Beauty" and "Freedom," as well as for Contemporary Christian Music Album with "What if We Were Real." She secured her first win with "Overcomer," which garnered the Contemporary Christian Album award, along with an additional nomination for Gospel/Contemporary Christian Performance for the title track.
According to David Pierce, K-LOVE Chief Media Officer on social media who reported her death, “Mandisa loved Jesus, and she used her unusually extensive platform to talk about Him at every turn. Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, her voice massive, but it was no match for the size of her heart. Mandisa struggled, and she was vulnerable enough to share that with us, which helped us talk about our own struggles. Mandisa’s struggles are over, she is with the God she sang about now. While we are saddened, Mandisa is home. We’re praying for Mandisa’s family and friends and ask you to join us.”
