51 Christians Killed in Bassa Community, Plateau State, in Overnight Attack by Fulani herdsmen

Tragedy struck the peaceful Zikke village in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday, April 14, as armed men believed to be Fulani herdsmen carried out a brutal overnight assault. By dawn, at least 51 lives—many of them Christians—had been lost, and an entire community was left shaken, mourning, and searching for answers.

According to local sources, the attackers entered the village during the night, setting homes ablaze and targeting residents as they slept. Many of the victims were members of the Christian farming community, and several others were left injured or displaced.

Community leaders say the assault was sudden and devastating, leaving families mourning the loss of loved ones and struggling to understand the motive behind the violence. Houses and properties were also destroyed, adding to the burden faced by survivors.

The Plateau State government has condemned the killings and called for calm. Security agencies have been deployed to the area, and investigations are reportedly underway to identify those responsible and prevent further incidents.

The attack in Bassa is one of several that have occurred in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region in recent years, where disputes over land use and farming rights have sometimes escalated into violent clashes. These recurring incidents continue to affect the safety and stability of communities, many of which are predominantly Christian.

Christian leaders in the area have urged the government to strengthen its response to rural insecurity and to support affected families with both relief and justice. While the motive behind the attack is still being investigated, residents say they hope for lasting peace and protection for their communities.

In the meantime, churches in Plateau State and across the country are offering prayers and support to the victims’ families. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has also expressed condolences and called for unity during this difficult time.

As the community of Zikke begins to bury the dead and rebuild, there is a strong desire for healing and hope. Many are leaning on their faith in God for comfort, while others are calling for collective efforts toward peace, reconciliation, and justice.
