Bishop T.D. Jakes Appoints Daughter and Son-in-Law as Successors at The Potter's House

Bishop T.D. Jakes

In a milestone announcement on Sunday, Bishop T.D. Jakes revealed plans to appoint Pastors Touré Roberts and Sarah Jakes Roberts as senior pastors of The Potter’s House, the Dallas-based megachurch he founded. The leadership handoff, scheduled for later in 2025, marks a sacred generational transition within one of the world’s most influential churches.

“For nearly 50 years, I’ve had the honor of serving as a pastor and truth teller,” Jakes stated. “As I approach my 50th year in public ministry, the call to address pressing societal issues such as economic disparities and social unrest grows stronger. Elevating Pastor Touré and Pastor Sarah ensures that The Potter’s House continues its legacy while embracing a future that demands innovative ministry.” Jakes emphasized that this transition is not a departure but a rebirth, promising to continue preaching and serving in a broader capacity.

The announcement follows a season of profound reflection for Bishop Jakes, including a widely publicized health emergency in late 2024 and the final International Leadership Summit held earlier this month under the theme “Changing of the Guard.” These events served as a prophetic prelude to the current transition, underscoring Jakes' focus on preparing the next generation for leadership.

While passing on day-to-day pastoral duties, Bishop Jakes will remain deeply involved as Chairman of the Board and spiritual overseer of The Potter’s House. His evolving focus will include expanding initiatives under the T.D. Jakes Group, addressing systemic social and economic challenges, and amplifying his voice through new media partnerships like his upcoming iHeartPodcasts show, My Next Chapter.

The appointment of Pastors Touré and Sarah Jakes Roberts reflects years of intentional succession planning. In 2022, the Roberts family relocated from Los Angeles to Dallas, signaling a deepened commitment to the ministry. Pastor Sarah’s leadership of the Woman Evolve movement and their appointment as assistant pastors in 2023 set the stage for this new era.

Together, Pastor Touré and Pastor Sarah bring a dynamic model of leadership that bridges generational divides while honoring the foundation laid by Bishop Jakes. “We are committed to building a ministry that carries Bishop Jakes’ heart into a future that is both faithful and forward-thinking,” said Pastor Touré. Pastor Sarah added, “This is a mandate to lead with compassion, clarity, and courage.”

Beyond pastoral leadership, the new senior pastors plan to expand the church’s community presence, including initiatives in North Dallas. Meanwhile, Bishop Jakes will spearhead efforts like the return of the Good Soil Forum in Dallas this June and a new global summit on Martha’s Vineyard in August 2025, focusing on economic empowerment and innovation.

This transition is a testament to Jakes’ lifelong vision: that leadership is dynamic, legacy is meant to propel, and ministry must evolve to meet the needs of tomorrow. As The Potter’s House enters its next chapter, the impact of this sacred handoff is poised to resonate across communities and generations for years to come.
